A day-old infant that was left on a bush walk close to Crush Rock, behind an incomplete Red Bricks Market in Mpape, has been rescued by the FCT Police Command.
SP Josephine Adeh, the command spokesperson, said that when police officers from the Juvenile and Women Care Section (JWC) of the Mpape Division reacted to a distress call at around 10:00 am on January 3, 2025, they discovered the baby wrapped in a cloth.
After being quickly rescued, the youngster was brought to Mpape Primary Health Care Centre, where a medical examination verified that the infant’s condition was stable.
According to Adeh, Khadija Ali, the baby’s mother, was taken into custody after receiving a tip from the neighbourhood.
She admitted to leaving the kid during questioning, claiming that she was unable to care for him after her husband left. “
”The FCT Police Command assures the public of its dedication to safeguarding society’s most vulnerable citizens and strongly condemns this act of child abandonment.
Following the completion of investigations, the mother will be prosecuted under sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003, while the rescued infant will be turned over to the Department of Social Welfare for appropriate care.
In this regard, the Command is grateful for the public’s cooperation and support.
Adeh urged all residents to be on guard and report any suspicious activity or emergencies by calling the Command’s emergency lines: 08061581938, 08032003913, 08028940883, CRU: 08107314192, PCB: 09022222352.
