Not fewer than 222 souls were lost to tragic road accidents in Oyo State in the year 2024.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps’ (FRSC) Oyo Sector Command, the 222 people died in various road traffic crashes (RTCs).
In Ibadan, the Corps revealed this in its year-end reports, which were signed by Mrs. Rosemary Alo, the Sector Commander.
The number, according to Alo, showed a decrease from the 270 fatalities reported in 2023.
The numbers came from 304 traffic accidents in 2024 and 495 traffic accidents in 2023, she said.
The sector commander pointed out that data showed that 779 people were hurt in collisions in 2024 as opposed to 1,321 in 2023.
The sector commander attributed the 2024 road traffic crash data reduction to aggressive stakeholders’ sensitization programs and enforcement exercises of the corps in 2024.
Alo added that the corps embarked on inclusive advocacy in 2024, sensitizing passengers to always engage their rights to speak out when a driver drives recklessly.
“Initially, the focus has always been on drivers but now we are telling passengers to note that more people lose their lives in an accident than the driver,” she said, referring to the 1,795 people involved in road crashes in 2024 compared to 2,935 people involved in 2023.
A number of factors, ranging from bad roads, narcotics and alcohol consumption, reckless driving e.t.c have been pointed as causes of accidents on our roads.
