Relief supplies were delivered to Akwa Ibom flood victims on Saturday by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The intervention falls under the Federal Government’s Special Intervention for 2024 flood in the local government areas of Uyo, Ibesikpo, Uruan, Nsit Atai, Eastern Obolo, Ikot Abasi, and Mkpat Enin, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The relief supplies comprised 600 bags of rice, 350 cartons of spaghetti, 60 cartons of vegetable oil, 60 cartons of tin tomatoes, 60 cartons of seasoning cubes, and 30 bags of iodized salt, according to Hajiya Zubaida Umar, the Director-General of NEMA, who made the statement.
According to Umar, who was represented by Mrs. Mmandu Aisueni, Head of Operations in Akwa Ibom, the gesture was intended to give the victims the assistance they needed to reconstruct their lives following the flood calamity.
“We come together today with a range of emotions, both hope and sadness over the devastating effects of the recent floods as we work together to give our brothers and sisters much-needed relief. “These villages have been severely impacted by the flood, which has disrupted lives and livelihoods and left many in dire need.
“We are providing these relief supplies today not only as a show of solidarity but also as a manifestation of our common humanity and dedication to your recuperation,” Umar stated.
Umar emphasized that long-term recovery necessitates teamwork and that the organization would keep collaborating with interested parties to guarantee everyone’s safety in the region.
Rep. Mark Esset, who represents the Uyo Federal Constituency, and Rep. Uduak Odudoh, who represents Ikot Abasi, both praised the intervention in their speeches, saying it was a huge relief to the victims in their respective areas.
Mr. Godwin Effiong, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the initiative and said the relief supplies would lessen the suffering they are going through.
